About Holly

I like to think of my sound as dark folk—often a bit haunting lyrically and stylistically, but with an end goal of making peace with the emotional hardships of life.
— Holly Lorette

Holly Lorette lives and breathes music, and she should. The Charlotte, NC-based vocalist and songwriter hails from a strong musical family that includes her NC Folk Heritage Award winning grandfather, Jim Shumate, as well other notable songwriters and musicians.

Holly’s music has been heavily influenced by the experiences she's had growing up in the South, a part of the country rich in its complexities and contradictions. She recently released her first self titled, solo album, Holly Lorette.

“I like to think of my sound as dark folk--often a bit haunting lyrically and stylistically, but with an end goal of making peace with the emotional hardships of life.  Being a part of this musical culture, surrounded by friends and family musicians has shaped how I experience and write music.”

In addition to her work as a solo artist, Holly Lorette also writes and performs with local favorite, Liz, Holly, & The Jolly Lollies an interactive band geared toward young children.  For more information please visit their site here The Jolly Lollies When she’s not performing, Holly also runs her own business with Liz, in Charlotte, The Mothership powered by The Jolly Lollies, a preschool program for children ages 1 to 4.
